Malr1ne explains how prize money splits work in Dota 2
Prize splits are set inside each organization
Stanislav "Malr1ne" Potorak commented on one of the less visible parts of professional Dota 2: how tournament winnings are divided between players and the organization. According to him, there is no universal model that every team follows. Instead, each organization works out its own arrangement with the players and decides, more or less, what percentage goes to whom.
That means prize distribution is not handled by a single league rule or by a fixed industry standard. The final split depends on the agreement reached inside the team, so the terms can vary from one roster to another. Malr1ne’s comments make it clear that these details are usually internal rather than public.
What this means for players
For viewers, prize money is often seen only as a number attached to a tournament placement. For players, however, that number can look very different once it is divided among teammates and the organization. Malr1ne’s explanation shows that the headline prize is not always the amount a player personally receives.
This matters when people judge the earnings of professional players or compare teams by prize totals alone. Two squads finishing in similar positions may still end up with different take-home amounts because their contracts and internal splits are not the same. In practice, that makes the financial side of pro Dota 2 much more individual than many fans assume.
A reminder about the business side of pro Dota 2
Malr1ne’s remarks also highlight how much of esports still runs on private agreements. Tournament results are public, but the business terms behind them usually are not. Organizations can structure compensation in their own way, and players accept those terms when they join a team.
For ranked players and aspiring professionals, the main takeaway is simple: moving from pubs to a team environment is not only about skill and results. It also means entering a much more complicated financial setup, where prize money is only one part of the overall picture.
While Malr1ne did not outline a specific percentage or name a standard rate, his comments were enough to show that prize distribution in Dota 2 is negotiated case by case. That is likely to remain the norm as long as teams and organizations continue to manage payments through private internal deals.
