Afoninje suggests limiting buybacks in Dota 2
During a PARI Universe watchalong, streamer Andrey “Afoninje” Afonin brought up one of the most discussed mechanics in Dota 2: buybacks. His comment was simple, but it pointed to a bigger balance issue that many players know from ranked games and pro matches alike.
What Afoninje said
Afoninje argued that the game does not necessarily need a large patch to feel different. In his view, one of the easiest ways to affect the flow of a match would be to limit the number of buybacks available in a game.
He said that Dota 2 could change a lot if each team had only one or two buybacks during a match. He also noted that, in his opinion, the game could even start with three buybacks under such a system.
The main point of his remark was not about a specific hero, lane, or item. Instead, it was about one of Dota 2’s core late-game tools and how strongly it shapes the outcome of fights, pushes, and high-ground defenses.
Why buybacks matter so much
Buybacks are one of the most powerful mechanics in Dota 2 because they allow a dead hero to return immediately to the fight. In close games, a single buyback can decide whether a team holds the base, wins a fight around Roshan, or turns a lost defense into a comeback.
That is why even a small change to the rule could have a major impact on how matches are played. If buybacks were more limited, teams would need to think more carefully about when to use them, and every death would carry even more weight.
For ranked players, such a change would likely make late-game decisions more punishing. Players would need to pay closer attention to positioning, cooldowns, and objective timing, since the safety net of repeated buybacks would be much smaller.
What this means for the game
Afoninje’s remark is not an official proposal from Valve, but it reflects a common kind of discussion in the Dota 2 community: which single mechanic would have the biggest effect if it were adjusted.
Buybacks have always been tied to the identity of the game. They create dramatic defenses and high-stakes teamfights, but they can also make some endings feel harder to close out. A cap on buybacks would not remove that tension, but it would likely shift the balance toward more decisive late-game execution.
For now, the comment remains a streamer’s opinion shared during a live viewing session. Still, it touches on a mechanic that every Dota player understands, from casual ranked games to the biggest tournament matches.
