Dota 2 average player count hit a 10-year high in October
October brought a strong rebound
Steam Charts data shows that Dota 2’s average player count rose significantly in October compared with September. The increase was 76,906 players, which is close to 13.5% month over month.
That rise was enough to push the game to an average of 648,200 players for the month. According to the source, this is the best monthly result Dota 2 has seen in 10 years.
What this means for the game
A higher average online is usually a sign that more people are spending time in the client, whether they are playing ranked, queuing for unranked matches, or returning after a break. For players who care about matchmaking, this kind of growth can be relevant because a larger active pool often means faster queue times and a healthier matchmaking environment.
At the same time, the source only gives a monthly average, so it does not show how player activity changed from day to day. Even so, the overall trend is clear: October was a notably stronger month for Dota 2 than September.
September’s loss was fully recovered
The report also notes that October’s gain was enough to offset what Dota 2 lost in September. In other words, the game did not just improve a little after a quieter month — it moved past the previous decline and set a new long-term high.
For ranked players, the main takeaway is simple. A larger and more active player base can make the ladder feel more alive, especially during peak hours. While population numbers do not directly change MMR, they are often watched closely because they can affect how quickly players find matches and how broad the matchmaking pool is across roles and skill ranges.
